I have a thing for Heroes. Capes and fancy costumes notwithstanding, I’m drawn to those who exemplify the very Spirit of Love, Kindness, generous Service, and quiet Integrity. Like Unicorns, Heroes are seemingly rare, though the magical connection between two of mine come together here. A while back, my wife, Pilar, reimagined a delightful granola we enjoyed while on Honeymoon. Her version: a robust, reliable, yet infinitely playful blend of flaked Ancient Grains Emmer, Spelt, Purple Barley, and Oats that’s complemented by the earth richness of walnuts and almonds. A slight dash of maple syrup affords a subtle, almost transitory sweetness. And golden raisins and cranberries afford surprising moments of tang and chew. Overall, its affect leans slightly savory, substantiated by an underlying sweet tone. For Pilar, this has always been Big Brother’s Granola. And, for me, Big Brother’s kind, loving, and infinitely reliable ways of simply showing up are always entwined with the image I hold of him walking Pilar down the aisle toward me the day we were wed. In truth, this seemingly simple Offering is a family heirloom; its origins are Ancient; its foundation and purpose is Love
